Key Facts About the National Trail Network

Czech Republic has one of Central Europe's denser cycling trail networks, administered jointly by regional governments and the national Klub českých turistů (KČT).

Trail Marking System

Colour-Coded Route Signage

Czech cycling trails use a four-colour stripe system identical to hiking trails. Red, blue, green, and yellow stripes on white backgrounds mark different difficulty tiers and distances. The system is maintained by KČT volunteers and typically updated after each winter season.

EuroVelo Connections

Six International Routes Cross the Country

Routes EV4, EV7, EV9, EV11, EV13, and EV19 pass through or alongside Czech territory. EV13 – the Iron Curtain Trail – follows the former border fence from the Šumava mountains to the Krkonoše range, covering over 300 km within Czech Republic. Full route data is maintained at eurovelo.com.

Surface Types

Asphalt, Gravel, and Forest Tracks

Approximately 60% of signed Czech cycling routes run on asphalt or compacted gravel, with the remainder on forest roads and unpaved tracks. River valley routes along the Elbe, Vltava, Morava, and Ohře tend to have the smoothest surfaces and the flattest gradients.

Seasonal Access

April Through October Is Standard Riding Season

Most marked trails are accessible from April to October. Higher-altitude routes in Šumava, Krkonoše, Jeseníky, and Beskydy may remain snowbound until May. Some lowland routes near Brno and in Southern Moravia can be ridden as early as March in mild years.

Czech Republic's Trail Network Spans Every Region

From the border forests of Šumava to the flat wine country of Southern Moravia, signed cycling routes connect most of the country's tourist destinations, nature reserves, and historic towns.
